Douglas M Bibus, MS, PhD

President

Dr. Doug Bibus founded Lipid Technologies in the 1995, a spin off from his academic laboratory at the University of Minnesota.

Dr Bibus is also a community faculty member at The Center for Spirituality and Healing at the University of Minnesota and a researcher in the area of fatty acid biochemistry and nutrition. Dr. Bibus is considered an expert in the area of omega 3 fatty acids and their analysis that stems from his time in the academic lab of Dr Ralph T. Holman who invented the term ‘omega 3’, discovered the metabolism and definitive essentiality nature of omega 3. Doug directs Lipid Technologies, LLC., an analytical and consulting group that focuses on fatty acid and lipid analysis and integration of lipid nutrition in biotech and food applications.

His research interests include the role of essential fatty acids in human and animal nutrition, the role of omega 3 fatty acids in the down regulation of the inflammatory response and the application of fatty acids in the treatment of disease. Other ongoing research has or is examining the role of omega 3 and fatty acid nutrition and its implications in the treatment of depression, schizophrenia, Tourette’s syndrome, cystic fibrosis, Crohn’s disease, heart disease, arthritis, critically injured and adult respiratory distress patients and in patients with autoimmune disorders.
Dr. Bibus is a member of several organizations including the American Oil Chemists’ Society, the American Chemical Society, the Society for Critical Care Medicine and the International Society for the Study of Fatty Acids and Lipids. He has been the recipient of the American Oil Chemists’ Honored Student Award and a two-time winner of the American Chemical Society’s Award in Analytical Chemistry. Doug is also a board member for the American Oil Chemists’ Society.

Dr. Ralph T Holman

Founding Partner

Dr. Ralph T Holman, was a pioneer in the field of lipid and fatty acid biochemistry.

He discovered and reported many of the fundamental aspects of fatty acid metabolism that are known today.

In 1963 he invented the term “Omega” to define the two classes of essential fatty acids and is now known as the ‘Father of Omega-3’. Dr Holman’s accomplishments are many including his membership in the American Academy of Sciences, founding editor of LIPIDS and Progress in Lipid Research and being a full professor at the University of Minnesota and Mayo Clinic. Also of significance was his education of hundreds in the field of fatty acid biochemistry and nutrition. Many of the top lipid analysts and researchers today passed through his laboratory at the Hormel Institute, The University of Minnesota. Dr Holman was the first person to measure omega 3 fatty acids by alkaline isomerization and developed a world class fatty acid analysis program that served as the basis of Lipid Technologies, LLC.

We invite licensed healthcare professionals to create an account with Lipid Lab and receive complementary testing kits.
